At the same time, writing comprehensive test suites before you've validated your product is also a mistake. An MVP's job is to learn, not to be bulletproof.

The right approach is somewhere between.


The Testing Trap: Why "Full Test Coverage" Is Wrong for MVPs

The argument for full test coverage sounds sensible: catch bugs early, refactor safely, ship with confidence. All true for mature products with stable requirements.

For an MVP, requirements change constantly. You might rework the core user flow three times in the first month based on user feedback. Every hour you spent writing tests for the old flow is waste.

The MVP testing goal is different: make sure the critical path works before users touch it, and get fast feedback when it breaks after launch.

That means being selective — testing the things that absolutely cannot be wrong, and accepting that peripheral features might have rough edges.


What to Test Before You Launch (The Minimum That Matters)

Focus on the user journeys that define your MVP's core value:

The sign-up flow — from landing page to authenticated session. If this is broken, nothing else matters.

The core action — whatever your MVP's primary value is, the happy path for that feature should be tested end-to-end.

Payment flow — if your MVP charges money, the payment → receipt → feature unlock chain needs to work correctly before you launch. Use Stripe's test cards to verify every state: success, decline, 3D Secure.

Email delivery — welcome email, password reset, and any other email triggered at sign-up should send and arrive before you have real users relying on them.

Auth edge cases — what happens when someone tries to access a protected route without being logged in? What happens when a session expires?

For each of these, do a manual end-to-end walkthrough before launch. On a real device. Not just localhost.


Manual Testing Scripts Your Team Can Run in 30 Minutes

Write a simple checklist that anyone on the team can run before a significant deploy:

Pre-launch check:

[ ] Log out and log back in
[ ] Complete the core user action (e.g., create a project, make a booking)

Automated Testing for MVPs: What to Start With

When you do write automated tests, prioritize:

Unit tests for business logic — functions that calculate prices, apply discounts, validate inputs, or transform data. These are fast to write, fast to run, and catch regressions that manual testing often misses.

Skip for v1: end-to-end browser tests (Playwright, Cypress) are powerful but slow to write and maintain. Add them after the core flows stabilize.


Beta Testing: How to Find and Brief Your First Testers

Before a public launch, get 5–10 people to use the product with minimal guidance.

Who to recruit: people who match your target user — not close friends who'll be polite, and not developers who'll think differently than your real users.

What to ask them to do: give them a scenario, not instructions. "Imagine you want to accomplish goal. Use this product to do it." Watch where they get confused, what they try that doesn't work, and what they skip.

What to ask afterward:

  • What was confusing?
  • What did you expect to happen that didn't?
  • Would you use this again?

You'll learn more from 5 beta sessions than from a month of analytics data.


What to Track After Launch to Know If It's "Working"

Once users are in the product, shift from pre-launch QA to monitoring:

Error tracking — set up Sentry or a similar tool before launch. It captures JavaScript errors, failed API calls, and unhandled exceptions in real time. You'll see problems you'd never find manually.

Uptime monitoring — a simple ping monitor (Better Uptime, UptimeRobot — both have free tiers) alerts you within minutes if the site goes down.

User-reported issues — make it easy for users to report problems. A simple "Report a problem" link that opens an email or a Typeform is enough. Users who bother to report issues are gold; don't make it hard.

The goal post-launch isn't zero bugs. It's fast awareness and fast response. Most users forgive problems that get fixed quickly. They don't forgive being ignored.
